Warriors hold Comets to 27 yards

Posted

Led by Kale Brakefield and Lane Taylor, Washington’s defense limited Dickson to 27 total yards of offense last Friday night including minus three in the second half with their twos and threes playing and zero first downs in a 54-0 blowout.

Meanwhile Hudson Howard was running rampant gaining 141 yards on 10 totes and a score all only in the first half.

The Warriors rushed for 401 total yards on 41 carries and seven touchdowns.

“I was very pleased with our defense,” head coach Brad Beller said. “I was pleased with the first team, the second team and the third team not giving up a first down all night.”

Brakefield led the tackling chart with seven stops including two tackles for loss. Taylor had six tackles with one tackle for loss.

Kash Guthmueller, Jordan Kilmer, Cash Sides and Ricky Ramirez all had five stops with Guthmueller and Kilmer both having tackle for loss.

“Brakefield, Taylor, Guthmueller and Kilmer led our defenders with our younger guys getting a lot of experience the other night,” Beller said,

Offensively, Washington was its own worst enemy in the early portion of the game coughing up four fumbles, losing three.

“We scored on every possession we didn’t turn it over,” Beller said. “The bright spot was the rushing game. Our offensive line and our running backs did a great job.”

Beller was referring the work in the trenches by Kingston Stringer, Wyatt Phillips, Sam Cantrell, Jaxon Byrd, Canyon Alcorta and Jax Mitchell.

“They had their best game of the season,” Beller confirmed. “It’s not like they’ve been getting whipped but the problem has been them not being consistent.

“At Dickson they executed at a high level of consistency moving people off the line. That’s what made the run game go.”

In addition to Hudson, Kaden McCarthy had five carries for 71 yards and a score and Josiah Dickerson carried the pigskin eight times for 82 yards and a touchdown.

McCarthy’s touchdown was a 16-yard scamper while Dickerson dove in from three yards out.

Creed Barrett tossed a 34-yard scoring strike to Mason Singletary in the third quarter when the Warriors put up 28 points. Guthmueller scored on runs of two and 15 yards. Xander Portillo closed out the scoring with a three yard run in the fourth quarter.

Up next are the Marietta Indians. They will be in town Friday with kickoff set for 7 p.m. Homecoming will be held at 6:30 prior to the football game.

The Indians operate out of a flex bone offense and base their defense out of a 3-4 set.

Warrior notes:

Head coach Brad Beller nominated Hudson Howard as the Offensive Player of the Week. Howard rushed 10 times for 141 yards and scored a touchdown.

Sam Cantrell was nominated as the Offensive Lineman of the Week. He graded out at 94.2 percent against Dickson.

Kale Brakefield was nominated as the Defensive Player of the Week for his seven tackle performance that included two tackles for loss.

Nominated as the Defensive Lineman of the Week was Lane Taylor. He had six stops and one tackle for loss.
