Warrior softball at full strength

Large portion of roster re-joins team after basketball

The Washington slow-pitch softball team is trying to play its way into form after a significant part of the roster returned to the diamond after winning the State title in basketball.

They got right down to business during Spring Break at the Broken Bow Festival.

“We saw four really good teams,” fourth year  Warrior head coach Tylor Lampkin said. “I expect all four of the teams we played to be in the State tournament.”

Chandler

Washington opened the festival with a 10-0 win over Chandler.

Washington scored in every inning, capping things with a four-run fourth inning.

Julie Hoehner and Raelee Adkins both homered. Hoehner also doubled.

Adkins finished the day with three RBIs and Hoehner with two.

The Warrior defense was error free and Chandler only managed one hit.

Choctaw

Washington was defeated 10-9 by Class 6A Choctaw.

Adkins stayed hot at the plate, going 3-3 with a walk and knocking in two runs.

Kelby Beller doubled.

Choctaw scored seven runs in the third inning to distance themselves.

Washington made a late run at the lead, scoring five in the sixth inning, but was unable to tie things up.

Broken Bow

The Warriors lost to Broken Bow 11-10.

Washington hung crooked letters in the third, fourth and fifth innings but trailed almost the entire game.

Ava Salcedo and Reese Schrader each had three RBIs.

Adkins doubled and was 2-3 with an RBI.

Hoehner was 2-3 with a pair of RBIs.

Ellie Wells was 2-3 with an RBI.

Howe

Washington beat Howe 9-8 in the next game.

Hoehner was a helper, going 3-4 with three ribbies.

Shelbie Caveness knocked in a par while going 1-4.

As Lampkin tries to settle on a lineup at this early stage of the season, he is also trying to settle on a pitcher and Briley Beller got the call against Howe.

Aside from Beller, Abby Byrd, Giorgia Fransceschelli and Ellie Wells have all gotten work in the circle.

“Replacing Alexis Gay won’t be easy,” Lampkin said. “I like what I’ve seen so far though.”

In addition to Gay, the Warriors lost to graduation Halle Andrews, Bailey Hyde and Emjay Lucas.

“We have a lot of new faces this year and we’ve been up and down at first,” Lampkin said. “But we will only go up from here. It was kind of rough with six starters coming back and not having any practice with them yet.”

Purcell

Washington beat Purcell 17-4 on Monday night.

It was a home run derby with the Warriors getting yard balls from Salcedo (2)Caveness (2), Hoehner and Adkins.

Emersyn Massey and Adkins both had triples and Massey had two additional doubles.

As a team, the Warriors had 21 hits.

“I’ve been proud of our defense,” Lampkin said. “And the things we aren’t doing well can be fixed.”

Washington is 3-2 and ranked No. 5 in class 5A.

They are scheduled to play Dale & North Rock Creek on Monday at FireLake.
