The Washington Warriors defeated Luther 63-49 in the Area tournament championship to punch their ticket to the State basketball tournament.

The Warriors used good defense and a barrage of three pointers down the stretch to stun their opponent.

“We played well to begin the game but didn’t handle ourselves very well late in the first quarter and to close the half,” said head coach Kale Simon. “We lost girls in transition and didn’t talk to each other.”

With a 28-25 lead at halftime the Warriors refocused for the start of the third quarter.

“We collected ourselves and did a better job guarding,” Simon said. The stops led to several threes in a span that allowed us to pull away.”

Senior Kyndall Wells splashed a trio of shots from behind the arc and finished the game with 14 points.

“Wells hit three big threes in a small span in a big stretch for us,” Simon said. “Preslee Johnson hit one early in the fourth quarter and Rielyn Scheffe hit one to seal the deal in the fourth quarter.”

Kelby Beller scored a team-high 15 points.

Johnson and Scheffe both scored 12.

Big House

Washington plays Silo tonight (Thursday) at 7:30 p.m. in the opening round of the State tournament.

The Rebels are led by talented senior Tiani Ellison.

“They’re good,” Simon confirmed. “(Ellison) averages about 30 points a game. We have to get locked in on making her basketball life as hard as possible.”

The coach said their guards can all shoot the three and his team will have to guard inside and outside.

“They’re hard to game plan for because a different girl could go off any night.”

Washington is 25-1 this season.

Boys

The Washington boys saw their season come to an end after a 65-50 loss to Cascia Hall in the Area tournament.

Mason Adams led the team in scoring with 15 points.

Senior Cash Andrews had 10 in his final game as a Warrior.

“Our seniors were so big for us this season,” said head coach Trevor Smith. “They bought in to what we were doing early. Once the seniors did everyone else did. They were big in keeping the chemistry together.”

The seniors included Jaden Cornelius, Andrew McCalip, Danny Chavira, Sam Hedenberg, Hayden Hicks and Andrews.

They finished this season with a 16-10 record.

They took third place in two tournaments and were runners-up at the Latta tournament.

“We play in a super tough conference and it prepared us for the playoffs,” Smith said. “We played a lot of top teams really tough and we’ll keep building on this season going forward.
