The Wayne Lady Bulldogs were knocked out of postseason play after losses to Drumright (7-5) and Quapaw (7-2) last Tuesday.
District games were moved up due to expected weather.
In their first game, thanks to two homeruns from Maddie Moreno and one from Audra Watts, the Lady Bulldogs beat Quapaw 8-0.
“We played a very clean game defensively and our bats were going, which is key in slow-pitch,” head coack Nikki Herrin said.
Drumright, the District tournament host, then played Quapaw and lost, setting up a game with Wayne.
The Lady Bulldogs and Lady Tornadoes each had 14 hits in the game. Watts, Moreno and Taelyn Ringwald collected three hits apiece for Wayne.
Wayne got on the board when Ava Stottlemyre singled in the first inning to score one run. In the third inning, Stottlemyre grounded out to score one more and Wayne held a 2-0 lead.
But, Drumright came roaring back with five runs in the fifth inning, including a two-run homer.
The Lady Bulldogs weren’t finished and scored two more runs to cut the Drumright lead on a two-run long ball by Watts.
Drumright answered with two more runs in the top of the sixth. And though Wayne scored one more in the bottom of the sixth, they couldn’t push any more runs across and dropped the game.
“We had a hard time getting the bats going and when you have one bad inning, it’s hard to recover from that.”
In their third game of the tournament, one-loss Wayne faced one-loss Quapaw and the Lady Bulldogs lost 7-2.
“To be honest, the team just didn’t have anything left in the tank for their third game of the day.”
Wayne outhit the Lady Wildcats 10-8, including multiple hits from Watts and Alyssa Hobson.
The Lady Bulldogs finish the season with a 12-13 record and will graduate no seniors.
“This has been a great season and I was pleased to have such great team chemistry. In some games our errors were killer and if we could have eliminated those, things could have been different,” Herrin said.
