School board ok’s personnel matters

With the 2022-23 school year starting today (Thursday), Purcell’s school board approved five new hires, one reassignment and two resignations/retirements on Monday.

The new hires are Betty Ratliff, junior high science teacher; Ashleigh Schaffer, secondary schools adjunct social studies teacher; Marquis Walters, high school paraprofessional; Amanda Ewing, junior high paraprofessional, and Maria Rojo, administration custodian.

Suzanne Torvi was reassigned from elementary school paraprofessional to child nutrition receptionist.

The pair of resignations/retirements were Kerri Raper, intermediate school teacher and cheer coach, and David Sikes, high school teacher.

In a ninth personnel matter, the board extended Jeff Fink’s contract by five days.

The days of the universal free lunch are gone and the board approved the following meal costs – breakfast for all grade levels will be $1.90 and lunches will be $3.10 at the elementary and intermediate schools and $3.35 at the junior high and high schools. Adults will pay $2.30 for breakfast, $4.85 for lunch and $1.10 for a snack.

New salary schedules for the 2022-23 school year were also approved.

The salary scale for teachers ranges from $38,752 for someone with a bachelor’s degree and no experience to $41,581 for a new teacher with a doctorate.

There are step increases for years of experience, maxing out at $54,583 for a teacher with a bachelor’s degree and 30 years experience, compared to $59,003 for the same experience but a doctorate.

Salary schedules for teacher assistants, custodians, bus drivers, secretaries,and transportation/maintenance employees were also approved.

Board members were told that teachers ratified the district’s contract with the Purcell Association of Classroom Teachers during their in-service  on Monday.

Certified special education teachers will receive a $1,000 retention stipend, the board decided.

In other business, the board approved Purcell FFA’s participation in shooting sports and a shooting competition during the Oklahoma Youth Expo.
