The Warrior basketball teams are in the midst of a jam-packed week with five games scheduled over eight days.
It’s the final push before the teams eye the start of the Playoffs when Lexington comes to town for the District tournament.
Girls
The No. 1 ranked girls team picked up wins over Marlow, Purcell and Lindsay.
They got off to a hot start against Marlow and dropped the Outlaws 62-20.
Washington scored 41 points in the first half while holding Marlow to only 16.
“I saw us being really unselfish on offense and attacking as a fist, and not individual fingers,” head coach Kale Simon said. “Playing like that is the difference between being good and being great.”
Preslee Johnson scored a game-high 18 points.
Shelbie Caveness joined her in double figures with 15 points.
Washington had 10 players score points.
Purcell
The Warriors beat the Dragons 68-41 on Friday night.
“I was really pleased with the team in the Purcell game,” Simon said. “We put the majority of four quarters together and played well.”
The Warriors again got off to a fast start and put pressure on Purcell. Washington opened with quarters of 25 and 15, while limiting Purcell to seven points in each of the first two.
Kelby Beller led all scorers with 18 points.
Johnson scored 16 in the game and Breanna Lindert had 13 points.
Lindsay
Simon was less happy with his team’s play against Lindsay Monday night in their makeup game.
“I was not happy with our defense in the game,” Simon said. “We didn’t choose to guard Lindsay and it affected every area of the game and made it closer. Credit Lindsay for it.”
Lindert led all scorers with 25 points.
Briley Beller was also in double figures with 12 points.
Washington is 19-1 on the year.
Boys
The Washington boys had a rough outing against Marlow in their game against last week.
They were defeated by the Class 3A No. 14 team, 62-40.
“We did not play very well,” head coach Trevor Smith said. “We got off to a slow start and shot the ball terrible. But credit them, we couldn’t get any traction.”
Marlow led by over 20 at halftime and Washington was never able to crawl back into the game.
Jack McKimmey led the Warriors with 11 points, followed by Mason Adams with eight.
Purcell
Washington came back and defeated the Dragons 42-38 on Friday night is a sloppy showing for the Warriors, who had a season-high 24 turnovers.
“We somehow found a way to win with all those turnovers,” Smith said.
The Warrior’s rebounding was part of the recipe for success as they doubled up Purcell in that stat, finishing 32-16 on the glass.
“We also made our free throws late,” Smith said of the 11 made free throws in the fourth quarter.
Cooper Collins and McKimmey each had 10 points in the game.
Lindsay
Washington beat Lindsay 64-57 on Monday night.
“We gave up the most points we’ve given up in a half this season but still won,” Smith said. “We refocused at halftime and played better together in the second half. We had a way higher sense of urgency.”
The Warriors are 15-5.
