Bulldog baseball is underway

7-1 win over Konawa last week, 10-7 loss to Wynnewood on Monday

The Wayne Bulldogs kicked off their season last Thursday with a 7-1 win over Konawa.

Thanks to five runs in the fourth inning, Wayne cruised to the win. Aiden Beck, Rhett Kennedy and Jaxon Dill each drove in runs.

Kaleb Madden was on the mound for Wayne. He went five innings and allowed just one run on six hits. He struck out eight.

Beck was aggressive on the basepaths with four stolen bases.

On Monday, Wayne dropped a 10-7 loss to Wynnewood.

The Bulldogs had 10 hits in the loss, but Wynnewood was hot from the first inning. Wayne was up 1-0, but the Savages plated four runs in the bottom of the first to take a lead they would never relinquish.

Madden, Kennedy, Wyatt Webster and Lane Jones each had two hits in the loss.

Despite the most recent loss, Collins is optimistic since he has a bunch of guys back.

“We’re stronger and bigger and we look better as of right now.”

Of course there are also some new faces on the team.

Junior Webster will be at third base. Braden McClendon is back and he will pitch and play center field.

Collins also mentioned Kennedy, 2022 MVP, as a returner at catcher and Madden who is a utility player. Collins also said he’s good at running the bases and will hit lead off.

Sophomores Dill, Ty Kemp and Duke Moore will be starters for the Bulldogs. Dill will be on the mound and at shortstop.

“Jaxon is a lot bigger and stronger and he’ll throw for us,” Collins said.

Kemp will be at second and hit in the middle of the lineup. Moore will be in the outfield and see some time on the bump.

“Ty is a fundamental guy. He does everything right for us. Duke is another guy who does everything right. He does a good job for us.”

Senior Jones will be at first and hit cleanup for Wayne. Collins said he does a good job in the field and at the plate for the Bulldogs.

Collins said pitching will be his strength as well as having Kennedy behind the plate.

“Rhett is solid at catcher for us. He does a good job at managing the game.”

Errors are the early Achilles heel for the Bulldogs.

“We need to clean up errors in the field and be smarter on the base paths. I thought it might be our bats that needed work, but they were going good against Konawa,” Collins said.

The Bulldogs’ schedule is tough from the start. They were at Wynnewood Monday against a bunch of returning athletic players, then at Elmore City on March 10, who are perennial district winners.

“Wynnewood and Elmore will be two good early tests for us.”

Last season Wayne finished with an 8-14 record and were beat out of Districts by Caddo.

“So far the guys are doing a good job of working hard and they have good attitudes. I’m excited about where we can go this year,” Collins said.
