You can easily count on one hand, and maybe even one finger, how many times a Purcell High School graduate makes the front page of The Oklahoman when they die.
But that was the case late last week with the passing of internationally acclaimed artist Bert Seabourn.
Seabourn graduated from Purcell High School with the class of 1950.
Seabourn was a maestro with a paint brush or working on a sculpture.
The proud Dragon grad was known world-wide but was down to earth when you would visit with him when he was back in town.
His paintings are in the permanent collections of the Vatican in Rome, China’s National Palace Museum in Taiwan, Moscow University in Russia, the American Embassy in London and the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C.
And that’s not to mention his work on display as part of the Oklahoma State Art Collection, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma City Museum of Art and Fred Jones Jr Museum of Art.
The north side of the Oklahoma Attorney General’s office is decorated with his sculpture “Wind Walker.”
Seabourn, who was born July 9, 1931 in Redbarn, TX, died November 17.
He had art exhibition shows all over the world and throughout the United States.
Seabourn was married to his high school sweetheart, the former Bonnie Tompkins, for 72 years.
A true Oklahoma and Purcell gem, Seabourn’s work will be a reminder of his life into perpetuity.
He made the world a better place.
