Purcell will be playing in the Newcastle wooden bat festival this week.

The Dragons will play today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. against Newcastle.

Friday they will play Mt. Saint Mary and Saturday CHA.

Tucker Bloodworth and Zach Idlett combined to toss a three hitter March 29 when Lexington paid a call on the Dragons.

Bloodworth struck out six and Idlett fanned five, limiting Lexington to just a pair of runs in a 12-2 run-rule victory.

Jett Tyler was a perfect 2-2 in the contest. Jorge Munoz was 2-3 with an RBI. Idlett helped his own cause going 2-2 including a double with three RBIs. Bloodworth, who was the winning pitcher, was 1-1 with an RBI. Creed Smith had a hit in four trips to the plate and knocked in a pair of base runners.

Purcell neatly tucked away a pair of district victories last Thursday and Friday.

The Dragons edged CHA last Thursday riding the pitching arms of Brodrick Smith and Drew Kimbrell.

“Brodrick got the start and Drew came in and got the win,” head coach Cole Sharp said. “I thought Drew did a good job competing on the mound. He attacked the zone and made them swing the bats.

“We were very aggressive on the base paths,” Sharp said.

The Dragons swiped eight bases.

“Our bats were kind of quiet for the majority of the game but came around and found a way to polite out in the end.”

The Dragons backed that victory up with a 7-2 victory over CHA on Friday.

Idlett went the distance throwing all seven innings for a complete game.

“I thought Zach pitched a great game,” Sharp said.

The crafty junior struck out 12 batters.

“He did a good job throwing strikes and is tied for the most pitching victories in the state with a 5-0 record,” Sharp said.

Boston Knowles and Hayden Harp both went yard in the game against the Crusaders.

“They are both swinging a good bat,” the coach said.

In fact, Knowles is tied for second in dingers in the state.

“Creed Smith is playing some good defense for us as the catcher. He has thrown out five kids attempting to steal. He is doing a good job of blocking the ball and keeping the ball in front.

“Freshman Tucker Bloodworth is also playing some good defense as well as playing first for us,” Sharp continued. “ That series with CHA was a big series for us because that made us go 6-0 in district play.

“We are having fun and competing and playing the game like it is supposed to be played. I like how we have multiple players and they know their role and everybody’s getting some game type situations.”

Cole and his Dragons are in the middle of a busy week with five games scheduled in six days.

Monday’s home district game with Heritage Hall was washed out.

The two teams were to play a double header Tuesday at Heritage Hall.

After the Newcastle tournament Purcell will play Holdenville back-to-back April 11 and 12 and then host the annual HOOT April 14-16.
