Purcell swept a double header from Lindsay last Thursday hiking their season record to 17-8 and winning the District Championship with 7-5 and 15-9 victories.

With Lucas Jones on the mound, Purcell broke open a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the fifth on a two run single by Dayton Smith.

The Dragons went on to score five runs in the frame and take the lead for good.

Jones two-hit the Leopards but six Dragon errors kept the game closer than it might have been with Purcell out-hitting Lindsay 10-2.

Cade Smith came in to relieve Jones and recorded the final six outs.

Brendan Farris went 2-4 at the plate while Creed Smith was 2-3. Nick Albright and Cade Smith both smacked RBI doubles.

Smith’s shot to left plated Gunner Fink, who reached after being hit by a pitch and Grant Smith, who reached on an error.

“I thought Lucas really came into this game focused and did a good job attacking the strike zone,” head coach Cole Sharp said. “He challenged the hitters all day. Cade came in and closed it out, giving a different a look to the Lindsay hitters.

“Overall, it was important to win the first game putting pressure on Lindsay.  We still need to clean up some mistakes on defense. We did a better job of hitting the baseball as a team.”

Purcell out-hit Lindsay 13-7 in the nightcap that sealed the District Title.

The speedy Dragons stole 17 bases, led by Cade Smith’s five. Farris swiped four and Nate Willis safely stole a pair of bases in the contest.

A 10 run fifth inning fueled Purcell’s victory when the Dragons sent 14 hitters to the plate.

The game was tied at seven all when Farris stepped to the plate.

He singled for one of his two hits for the game and scored a pair of Dragon base runners giving Purcell the lead for good.

Undefeated Brodrick Smith was credited with the pitching victory. He went 5 2/3 innings giving up seven hits and nine runs.

Albright tossed 1/1/3 innings of shutout ball to record the final four outs and get the save.

Leading the 13-hit attack was Albright who went 3-5 and knocked in four base runners.

Willis, Creed Smith and Dayton Smith all went 2-4. Willis finished with four RBIs while Creed and Dayton had a single RBI apiece.

Both Willis and Cade Smith scored three times apiece for the victorious Dragons.

“Brodrick kinda’ struggled early in the game but settled down in the third and fourth innings,” Sharp said.  “Nick came in and threw strikes and helped us secure the win.”

Purcell spotted the Leopards a seven spot before their bats warmed up.

The Leopards scored two in the bottom of the first and added five in the second.

But the Dragons battled back out scoring the Leopards 15-2 after the third inning.

“It was a crazy game,” Sharp confirmed.

“We had a big inning in the fifth scoring 10 runs.  I was proud of our kids battling back being down 7-0 because it was not going our way early in the game at all. Our kids kept plugging away and we finally had a good inning getting timely hitting. That’s what I’ve been preaching all year,” the coach said.

The Dragons open the Regional Tournament at Jones Thursday at 1 p.m. against Oklahoma Christian School.

The winner of that game will play the winner of Jones and Alva at 3 p.m.

Only one team will advance to State.
