Purcell split a pair of softball games last week, dropping a 3-1 district game at Harrah September 3 but bounced back to shut out Washington 4-0 last Thursday.
The Dragons were to take a 9-2, 3-1 record into home district games with Pauls Valley Tuesday and Seminole today (Thursday).
The game at Harrah was the day after Labor Day and turned into a weird one.
“Our game got pushed back until 5:30 and then we had to wait another hour because an umpire was stuck in traffic,” Jones said.
The game ended up not starting until 6:15 p.m.
“The girls started off slow and by the time we got it together it was too late,” Jones said.
Purcell matched Harrah’s four hits but made three costly errors.
“It was the errors that got us and we couldn’t string anything together,” the coach said.
Purcell hit the ball hard just right at the defenders.
Katelynn Carwile, who was 2-2 at the plate including a double, and Brook Fleming combined to strike out 10 and limited Harrah to four hits.
Chelsea Spain had a triple and Addie Stanton had the other Purcell hit.
“It was a district loss but I trust we will do our job in the rest of the district games to put us in a good spot for postseason,” Jones said.
Carwile went the entire seven innings in the circle against Washington.
Purcell out-hit the Lady Warriors 7-4 with Carwile helping her own cause going 3-4 to lead the offense.
Hannah Buchanan went 2-3 with a pair of RBIs.
Karson Jennings, back from illness, and Sandra Del Toro both had a hit and an RBI in the contest.
“It was a good game in front of an awesome crowd,” Jones said. “We came ready to play.”
Carwile started the game with a strike out and then got the bats going with a single in the first.
Spain bunted her over to second. She moved to third on a Buchanan single. After Fleming walked, Jennings popped up foul to the first base side. Carwile tagged up and scored the first run of the game.
Buchanan came home on a Del Toro hit for the second run of the inning.
Purcell pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
“Both teams played good defense,” Jones said.
Carwile ended up fanning 10 Washington hitters.
“It was a good win to end the week on and start over from the Harrah game,” Jones said.
Byng had to cancel their visit to Purcell next Monday due to having to make up a district game. As of press time, Jones was attempting to find a replacement game.
