Norma Jean Smith was born May 20, 1929 in Purcell, Okla., one of six children born to John Smith and Bessie (Parker) Smith. She was raised in Wayne and attended Wayne Schools, graduating with the Class of 1947.
Norma was working as a waitress, when by chance one day, she met a young man working for the Santa Fe Railroad. His name was Bob Hynds, and they hit it off right away. Not too long afterward, they were married, and Norma followed him with their mobile home. They eventually returned back home to Wayne where they raised their children; sons, Michael and Mark and daughter, Andrea.
For several years, Norma worked alongside Bob, and they owned and operated a small engine repair shop. She remained active in the Wayne community and served as Wayne Alumni Secretary for many years. Norma was a woman of great faith and a member of the Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church in Purcell. She will be remembered as a wonderful mother and grandmother, sister, aunt and a true friend. She will be dearly missed!
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Hynds; son, Michael Hynds; parents, John and Bessie Smith and siblings, Bernice Wright, Lena Greene and Kenneth Smith and niece, Lois Ann Witten.
Norma is survived by her son, Mark Hynds and wife, Mary, of Wayne; daughter, Andrea Shaver of Noble; grandchildren, Leslie Brannum and husband, Stanley, of Wayne and Jeremy Hynds and wife, Tamera, of Noble; two great-granddaughters, Emma Brannum of Wayne and Presley Shaver of Noble; brother, Robert Smith of Oceanside, Calif., and a host of other family and friends.
