Funeral services for Martha Belle Stark Johnston, 80, of Lexington were held Friday, June 14, 2019 at the Wilson-Little Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was at the Lexington Cemetery under the direction of Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Purcell.
Mrs. Johnston went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 11, 2019.
She was born December 4, 1938 in Purcell, the seventh of nine children born to Samuel David Stark and Mildred Faye Jones Stark. She moved to Asher, Okla., in 1940, and lived in a log cabin built by her grandfather, John Jones.
She graduated from Asher High School in 1956 and worked at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, on the side, she worked as a waitress at the Beacon Café. It was here that she met a young man from Konawa named James Elmer Johnston. They married in 1958 and divorced in 1971. Together they had four children, sons, James and Jay, and daughters, Monica and Mary. Martha later moved to the Purcell and Lexington area.
She graduated from the Mid-America Vo-Tech as an LPN in 1977. Martha worked at various nursing homes in the area, at Purcell Municipal Hospital and for LARC. She worked for 14 years at Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services in Norman, before medically retiring at age 59.
Martha cherished her family and loved spending time with her nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was a gifted quilter and shared her talents with her family and friends, even donating several to help raise money for charitable causes. She volunteered at Lexington, Noble and Purcell Senior Citizens.
She was a woman of great faith and longtime member of the Memorial Assembly of God Church in Purcell. Martha loved flowers, but asked that in lieu of flowers, that memorials be made to Food Program at Memorial Assembly. She will be remembered for her loving and caring heart for her Lord, her family, her neighbors. She will be dearly missed!
She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Mildred Stark; son, James William Johnston; grandson, Brandon Keith Davis; granddaughter, Kylie Johnston; and three sisters, Doris Fore, Reba Archer and Theo McKorsky.
Martha is survived by three children, Monica (Johnston-Penner) Hack of Purcell, Jay Johnston and wife, Beverly, of Lexington and Mary Johnston of Lexington; seven grandchildren, Joshua Johnston and wife, Tamera, Shallon LaFleur and husband, Joshua, Star Dodson and husband, Gary, Julia Johnston, Summer Venegas, Shamra Williams and Jill Johnston; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other family and friends; three brothers, Sam Stark and wife, Jo, of Lexington, John Stark of Lexington and Curtis Stark and wife, Pebbles, of Harrah; and two sisters, Zella Nance of Edmond and Beulah Borrell and husband, Chuck, of Mission Viejo, Calif.
