Mrs. Brakefield passed away October 1, 2012.
Dorothy Altha Herrin was born September 25, 1923 in Asher, Okla., the oldest of 10 children born to Oliver Herrin and Ora (Howard) Herrin. She grew up a farm girl near Wayne and attended Wayne Schools, graduating in 1942.
She married her true love, a young man named Mack Brakefield on January 3, 1943 in Hattiesburg, MS. They made their home in Wayne where together they raised their four children; daughter, Maxine, and sons, Mack Jr., Bruce and Charlie. While her children were young, Dorothy worked hard as a farmer’s wife and homemaker. She later opened Dorothy’s Beauty Shop and operated it for seven years. Dorothy then took a job as a dispatcher at the Griffin Memorial Hospital in Norman, retiring after more than 20 years.
Dorothy loved her community and stayed active with her kids in school, and even was elected Mayor for two terms. She moved to Westbrook Assisted Living in in Purcell in 2006. For the past several years, she had been active with the Daughters of the Nile Adoram Temple #95 in Oklahoma City. She was a longtime member of the Wayne Church of Christ. She enjoyed the outdoors, and especially gardening and canning.
Dorothy cherished her family; she was a wonderful wife and mother, sister, aunt and a good friend. She will be dearly missed!
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mack Brakefield; her parents, Oliver and Ora Herrin; three sisters, Marie, Pat and Jackie and three brothers, Buddy, Herman and Bobby.
