What better time to dust off your Christmas spirit than right after the last firecracker pops on the 4th of July?
Unless you are Peggy Christian, to whom McClain County’s Operation Christmas is a 365-day commitment.
Christian knows most folks don’t share her zeal for the yuletide season.
But 2019 is half gone and then some. And face it, there are just 155 shopping days until the Operation Christmas bounty is carried out of the Multi-Purpose Building by grateful recipients.
Christian said Tuesday that donations are trickling in when what she’d like to see at this point is a flood of charitable giving.
So she’s starting a Christmas in July promotion to raise awareness – and cash.
With the start of school in just a few short weeks, school supplies are always a good gift choice for Operation Christmas.
School supply suggestions are crayons (both regular and jumbo), composition books, glue sticks, colored and regular pencils, regular and snub-nose scissors, pens and construction paper.
Also, if anyone crochets, Operation Christmas always has a need for hats and baby blankets.
Even “gently used” bicycles are welcome.
Learning toys, art supplies and children’s books are also good choices.
The county provides storage space for Operation Christmas gifts.
Operation Christmas will accept “anything people want to donate” – with one caveat.
“No garage sale leftovers,” Christian said.
