Fatal crash

Damage is visible to the front of the semi that struck a Jeep in the southbound lanes of I-35 last Friday resulting in the death of a Texas man driving the Jeep, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol investigated a fatality traffic accident south of Purcell on I-35 last Friday afternoon.

Trooper Shayne Ballard was the lead trooper at the scene at southbound mile marker 91.

Killed in the 4:30 p.m. accident was Antonio D. Retana, 56, of Forney, TX.

He was driving a 2016 Jeep Wrangler when it and a 2013 Volvo semi collided. Retana was transported by AirEvac to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City where he was pronounced deceased.

Ballard said the semi, driven by James Weiselogel, 47, of Sulphur Springs, TX. He was not injured in the two vehicle collision.

Ballard said Jeep was swerving due to upcoming construction. The semi struck the Jeep from behind.

Retana was pinned in the wreckage before being freed by the Purcell Fire Department.

Ballard was assisted at the scene by Lt. Alex Winrow, Trooper Tyrie Haught, Trooper Jeff Cummings, Trooper Heath Ragland, Trooper Chad Pape, the Purcell Police Department, Purcell Fire Department, AirEvac and Wadley’s EMS.
