A Byars man, James Scott Blackwood, 61, is facing a charge of first degree manslaughter in the June 2 shooting of Leroy Atkinson, also of Byars.
Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) Special Agent David Gatlin assisted the McClain County Sheriff’s Department in the investigation.
According to the OSBI, Blackwood is a former sheriff deputy from California and was doing some target practice when Atkinson drove his four wheeler into the line of fire some distance from the target Blackwood was shooting at.
Investigators said Atkins was struck in the head and killed.
The investigation culminated with the filing of the charge in McClain County District Court late last week.
Blackwood is out of jail on bond.
