A popular form of medical treatment has made its way to Purcell Municipal Hospital with the recent opening of a pain management clinic.

PMH is partnering with St. Anthony to offer a pain management clinic.

Fellowship trained interventional pain management and anesthesiology Dr. Rafael Justiz is officed at PMH every second and fourth Thursday.

Dr. Justiz said St. Anthony saw a need for a pain management clinic in Purcell.

The physician comes highly trained by the founder of transforaminal adhesiolysis, also called Racz Procedure. Dr. Justiz was trained by his mentor, Dr. Gabor Racz.

The Racz Procedure is used to reduce scar tissue from the epidural space of the spine.

This simple procedure involves a series of injections into the spine, Dr. Justiz said.

The scar tissue loosened by this procedure will allow other medications to reach the nerves.

Dr. Justiz said the lysis of adhesions is the process of cutting scar tissue within the body. This is done to restore normal function and reduce pain.

The procedures will be performed at PMH.

“I offer procedures to avoid surgery,” Dr. Justiz said. “I always offer a way for patients to stay clear of narcotics addiction through pain pills.”

The pain management physician treats all types of pain with pain management.

“I treat headaches, facial pain back, disk, scar tissue and vertebrae body fracture pains,” he said.

Another procedure Dr. Justiz performs is the burning of nerves, so the nerves will not regrow. This procedure will also take away pain.

Dr. Justiz grew up in Miami, Fla. Before coming to St. Anthony, he was a professor at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas, for some years.

“I wanted to be a football player,” Dr. Justiz said. “I started college when I was 26 and medical school at age 31.”

While at St. Anthony, Dr. Justiz has trained four other physicians in Oklahoma City.

He comes to Purcell holding three board certifications, and along with being a pain management specialist, he is also an anesthesiologist.
